Nelly S. Toll was born in Lwow Poland. She was an average girl living in Poland except she was Jewish. Once Hitler had power the Nazis come to Poland and forced every Jew in Lwow to move to a Ghetto, a place were they keep Jews till they were deported to a camp. After being in the ghetto her and her mother went to the Janowska labor camp. There were there for only a few weeks and her and her mother escaped. They went to live with a Christian family. In there house there was a small hole where a window use to be till they redid the house. It then became a hiding place for her and her mother. Any time someone came to the hose they had to hide in the window hole. Since Nelly had nothing to do all day the Wojteks, the Christian family, bought her some paint. She began to paint and became very talented. On one of her birthdays she got a small book and pen which soon became her diary. She had a special code so that no one could read what she was saying because that would be dangerous if some one found out that she was Jewish and in hiding. After many years of being locked in a small room the Russian Soldiers finally came. They were liberated. Her mother went to meetings for the Jews were they would find out if of there families were still alive. Nelly ans her mother could not find any thing about him. Nelly’s mother did meet another man and they became very close and soon got married. It was a few years till they moved to America since the other people that were being persicuted try to move to America. When Nelly did moved to America and statred to go to school here and made many new friends. Her mother was then going to have a baby. Nelly now had a new baby sister. After Nelly was done with primary school she went to the Universtiy of Pennsylvania and got a Masters degree in Fine Arts and Art History from Rutger University.
